Save the date for Point-to-Point, Guy Fieri’s new Delaware dining biz + Longwood’s multimillion dollar makeover

Save the Date for Winterthur’s Point-to-Point, 2021

You may not want to buy that extravagant sun hat just yet. But Winterthur has signaled that Point-to-Point – Delaware's biggest tailgate party – may yet take place this year.

Event organizers recently teased a save the date for Sunday, May 30 in anticipation of approvals from the Delaware Department of Agriculture and the Division of Public Health.

Traditionally held the first Sunday in May, Point-to-Point typically draws 16,000 fans and revelers to the 1,000 acre former country estate of H. F. du Pont.

Socially-distant tailgates?

Should the event move forward, Winterthur cautions there may be some noticeable changes. Website language states: “We hope to have a very safe and fun-filled event again this May. Please understand that large gatherings require exceptional care in planning.”

Last year marked the first complete cancellation of the event - due to Covid-19. In 2019, the races were canceled due to wet conditions on the track.

‘Flavortown Kitchen’ opens in Delaware

Now you can go to Flavortown without leaving the 302. Guy Fieri, the Food Network star behind "Diners Drive-ins and Dives,” recently launched three new “Flavortown" kitchens in Christiana and Wilmington. Fieri teamed up with two local Italian eateries — Bertucci’s in north Wilmington and at the Christiana Town Center and Brio Italian Grille at Christiana Mall — to deliver Guy Fieri favorites straight to your home or office.

The delivery-only restaurant concept is rolling out in select cities across the country.

The virtual kitchens feature real deal flavors from Chef Guy Fieri — like Bourbon Brown Sugar BBQ Wings, a Mac-N-Cheeseburger and a “crazy” Cuban sandwich. The menu includes 14 “mains” plus sides and desserts.

Orders can be placed through the Flavortown Kitchen website or through DoorDash, UberEats and Grubhub.

The "Crystal Palace" is the crown jewel of Longwood Garden's expansion plan

Longwood’s ambitious expansion

Longwood announced exciting news this month – that plans are underway for a $250 million-dollar expansion plan that will transform the nation’s preeminent botanical garden and dazzle visitors for years to come.

Longwood Reimagined: A New Garden Experience is the most extensive, complex project the Kennett Square institution has ever undertaken.

The new ‘Crystal Palace’

Longwood is opening up and creating 17 new acres of a new garden experience. A new ‘Crystal Palace’ is crown jewel of the project. This is the affectionate nickname for an expanded West Conservatory, which will completely transform the way you observe all that grows inside this magical new structure.

The Conservatory will be housed in a new 32,000-square-foot glasshouse that appears to float on pool of water. Constructed over a continuous sheet of water, the Palace will feature three islands filled with Mediterranean-inspired gardens, walkways, canals and fountains.

The Cascade Garden – the only rainforest design of its kind in North America – will move to an all-new 3,800-square-foot glass house of its own where this “rain forest” will be preserved and thrive.

A new, modern dining room is coming to Longwood Gardens

New restaurant and event space

Plans also include the renewal of Longwood’s beloved Waterlily Court, and expansion of the Bonsai display, which will also move outdoors.

A new restaurant and private event space, with vistas into Longwood’s spectacular Main Fountain Garden, is also in the works, as is an expansive, state-of-the-art education space.

Construction will take the better part of three years. But Longwood and all of its special attractions and holiday displays will remain open to visitors during this time.
